High Speeds and High Risk Just Outside of Toronto

There is no track on the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón schedule like Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The 2.459-mile, 10-turn circuit is the fastest and most daunting that drivers face all year. CTMP (formerly Mosport International Raceway) boasts the fastest qualifying lap – 138.116 mph – and average race speed – 124.024 mph.

The brake pedal doesn’t get a lot of action on a clear lap around CTMP – especially in the prototypes. What do ALMS drivers think about the risks and rewards at the Series’ only Canadian stop? We’re glad you asked...

Bill Auberlen, BMW Team RLL - No. 55 BMW M3 GT (GT)

“It's the best roller-coaster ride you've ever been on in your life. The first three turns are so fast. When I used to race prototype cars, our first three turns were 150-plus mph in each corner. The GT cars are only slightly slower than that now. You're in the ragged edge everywhere. This is a track that really does separate the men from the boys.”

Lucas Luhr, Muscle Milk Pickett Racing - No. 6 Honda Performance Development ARX-03a (P1)

“Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is much, much faster than Lime Rock with elevation changes and blind corners. When you go out on track for the first few laps it takes some getting used to the speed; every corner is just so quick. It’s one of the tracks where, when I am out of the car, I never go around the track to look at other cars going around because it scares the hell out of me! I’ll see other cars out there and I’ll be like ‘Oh, he’s not going to make it.’

“Mosport is its own unique place. The speed difference with the GT cars is also quite big because we have so much downforce on the P1 car, so it makes the closing speed to them way higher than at a track like Lime Rock where you are nearly always in traffic.”

Kyle Marcelli, Merchant Services Racing - No. 8 ORECA FLM09 (PC)

“There's nothing like (the track) anymore. It really tests a driver. It's so much fun in a prototype. You really get to feel what these cars are like and what they can do.”

Johannes van Overbeek, Extreme Speed Motorsports - No. 01 Ferrari F458 Italia (GT)

“I would describe it as a high-speed ballet. It is very fast with a lot of subtleties and nuances both from driving a lap and driving with faster traffic. It is a cooperative endeavor to get around efficiently with all the speedy corners. You really need a deliberate but smooth performance to get around well and not pinch it because you cannot afford to go off there. The consequences are so high because the stakes are so great.”

Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport is set for noon ET on July 22 from the 2.459-mile, 10-turn Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
