Peter Boyle of Oil City, Pennsylvania claimed the Best in Show award with his 1928 Isotta Frashini 8A SS to close out the inaugural Cobble Beach Concours d'Elegance this weekend, in what was a showcase of beautiful cars and weather at the picturesque Cobble Beach Golf Links on Georgian Bay, just minutes from Owen Sound, Ontario.
The Isotta Fraschini 8A SS is an ultra rare machine of which two versions were ever produced. The Italian chassis was mated to an American body built by LeBaron and sold for an original purchase price of $20,000 – about $240 to $250,000 today. The Fraschini was originally owned by an airplane mogul and his actress/dancer wife and was the 2007 second place finisher in show at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours.
Among the 111 cars covering the Cobble Beach grounds was a yellow 1912 Stutz Bearcat which won the Fans' Choice Award, a mint green 1934 Pierce Arrow which was a previous Pebble Beach class winner, Gilles Villeneuve's 1978 Ferrari 312 T3 F1 car, and a 1949 Cadillac Coupe de Ville concept – the first car to feature a built-in telephone system.
The Concours d'Elegance was organized by golf course owner Rob McLeese to raise funds for Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital helipad project to help those in the Owen Sound and similar areas gain quick access to urgent medical care. In just its first year, the event proved hugely successful, raising upwards of $30,000 for the hospital. Next year the event promises to host an even larger entry list, with events taking place on the Saturday and Sunday of the September 13-14 weekend.
