The NASCC and ARCA organized five race weekends at the 2.1-kilometre Castrol road course in Nisku, Alberta for the 2014 season. The race track is still evolving and many minor changes were made between every race weekend. This encouraged drivers to be at peak performance at each event, as sight lines for their braking point markers were always changing – whether by a few inches, or in some cases, feet.
The owners of the track and their staff have been working very hard over the last two seasons, listening to the competitors and continuously making changes to improve the road course. It has been a real pleasure working with these keen and enthusiastic track owners, and the motorsport community is looking forward to more positive changes in the future.
The attendance of competitors during race weekends was very consistent, leading to many exciting races. Everyone was hoping to capture their class championship at the end of season. These events saw many different manufacturers represented on the race track, which provided exciting moments for competitors and spectators.
Each race weekend saw many sprint races, and those run groups were most often divided up into Closed Wheel GT, Closed Wheel IT and the Spec Miata class. The GT group had an average of 13 cars per group, with 18 in the IT class. The Spec Miata category had an average of 11 cars for the WCMA points races. This class has been very successful, displayed in the 19 registered competitors last season. For 2015, Gerard Tobin (instrumental in promoting the class) recently said there may be as many as 25 Spec Miatas running. We have not seen one-make classes this large in the Prairie Provinces since the Yokohama 1600 series, or the Honda Michelin or Players GM series in the late 1980s.
Many drivers collected hardware at the WCMA AGM. Chris Semanciw captured the 2014 Spec Miata championship and earned the overall WCMA title as well.
