Speed Television commentator Bob Varsha hosted Ed Bennett (President and CEO of Grand-Am), Scott Atherton (President and CEO of the American Le Mans Series) along with Ed O’Hara of SME Branding to unveil the new, unified sportscar series that will begin racing in 2014.

Announcing the new series as “United Sportscar Racing,” the group revelead the new class structure and launched the new series' logo. They also revealed a revised IMSA logo, which will be the sole sanctioning body for the new series.

The new name was chosen after 7,500 submissions from fans around the world. SME Branding consulted major sponsors from each series before deciding on the winning submission from Florida resident Louis Satterlee, who entered the “Name the Future” fan contest.

The new logo for United Sportscar Racing consists of a red, stylized racing helmet.

The new class structure will include five classes and debut at the Daytona 24 Hours next year. The Prototype class will include the current ALMS P2 cars, Daytona Prototypes and the DeltaWing, which will see regular action for the first time this year in the ALMS P1 class. The Prototype class will consist of the current ALMS Prototype Challenge cars.

In GT, the top tier will be GT Le Mans (GTLM), which will be made up of the ALMS GTE cars. GT Daytona (GTD) will include Grand-Am GT cars and the ALMS GTC challengers. The GX class will be brought over from the current Grand-Am series.

While there hasn’t been confirmation from the new series regarding class participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year, Atherton said that the new naming structure is reflective of the partnership they hope to have with the ACO (Le Mans sanctioning body) next year. He also said they are currently in talks and in a “good position.”
