Accomplished road-course driver Ron Fellows completed a one-day test at Sonoma Raceway on Tuesday, in advance of the 25th Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend, June 21-23.
Fellows, who will pilot the No. 33 Circle Sport Chevrolet, will compete in both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series road-course events at Sonoma Raceway and Watkins Glen International (Aug. 11). Fellows completed approximately 80 laps on the 10-turn, 1.99 mile road course during the test.
“It’s been a couple years since I’ve driven a Cup car,” said Fellows, who has competed in eight NASCAR Cup races in Sonoma, posting a best finish of third in 2003. “These things have so much more horsepower (than the Nationwide cars) and are tricky to drive.”
Fellows, who lives in the Toronto area and will be inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in September, has six NASCAR victories to his credit in NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series competition.
“The ride’s a little harsher than I remember, but I’m also a little older,” added Fellows on testing the Sonoma Raceway road course.
Fellows will join other “road-course ringers” for the Toyota/Save Mart 350, including Justin Marks and Victor Gonzalez, who will both race for Tommy Baldwin Racing.
An accomplished road-course driver who has success in every discipline of racing, Fellows has wins in the 24-hour classics at Le Mans and Daytona, NASCAR Truck and Nationwide stock car competition, and three championships in the American Le Mans Series. In 23 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races over 15 years, Fellows has recorded a pair of runner-up finishes at Watkins Glen in 1999 and 2004.
