Scott Dixon took the top qualifying spot for Sunday’s race at the Honda Indy in Toronto, making it two Toronto poles in a row for the Target Chip Ganassi Racing team this weekend, and a Target lockout for the front row in tomorrow’s race.

His teammate Dario Franchitti took pole for the first standing-start IndyCar race, starting today at 3 p.m. Dixon starts from fifth.

DSC7791Franchitti appeared to have both poles secured this weekend, but Dixon drove his no. 9 to a blistering 58.968 lap time, beating his teammate within the final minute to claim the top spot. He currently sits fourth in the driver standings behind Helio Castroneves, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti, and one place ahead of Toronto’s James Hinchcliffe. Castroneves starts from seventh and third, Hunter-Reay from sixth and fourth, and Andretti from 10th and 18t today and tomorrow, respectively. Hinchcliffe will start today in 13th and tomorrow in 12th.

“Race 2 is going to be a front-row lockout for us,” Dixon said. “ I think we’re excited after what happened yesterday, I messed up on a couple of the corners, which costs us, so I don’t think we had the time for Dario yesterday. But they put in some work on the car last night, making a few adjustments, and it’s definitely got the speed to drive today.”

Starting from second tomorrow, Franchitti spoke on the difficulties that can occur with a doubleheader race weekend.

DSC7773“It’s a different rhythm when you’re used to doing practice and then qualifying,” he said. “To go straight into qualifying is interesting, and I’m not a morning person. On the black tires, I brushed the wall – I more than brushed the wall – in turn one, and the boys had to replace a toe link and it took them literally a minute-and-a-half to replace the left rear toe link, put the red tires on and away we went. I was pushing as hard as I could, and it was a really good lap actually.”

The pole marks the first for Dixon since June 2012 at Belle Isle, and the first time since October 2010 at Miami-Homestead that Target Chip Ganassi Racing has started one-two.

Tomorrow’s race will return to the traditional rolling-start format, and the green flag waves at 2:40 p.m.
