It has been 25 years since Audi has created it’s first automobile with a diesel engine, and to celebrate, the German automaker has released a special concept to commemorate the occasion. Called the RS5 TDI Concept, the model replaces the traditional 4.2 litre V8 engine with a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 TDI.
Diesel engines are known for their powerful torque figures when compared to conventional gasoline engines, and this concept is no exception, with the TDI generating 380 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. To make this concept even more special, the automobile utilizes an electrically driven supercharger that eliminates all turbo lag by ensuring the smaller turbo is always spooled up.
The concept utilizes Audi’s quattro system and eight-speed automatic transmission and is capable of reaching 100 km/h in around 4 seconds all the way to a top speed of 280 km/h. The most special part of all is the fact that these performance figures are possible with an engine capable of consuming less than 5 litres of diesel per 100 km. Considering that these figures are higher than the RS5, there is a lot of promise with diesel engines in Audi’s future lineup.
