Canada, the 20th country to host a Porsche one-make Cup Challenge racing series, will see the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada roar to life at Calabogie Motorsports Park in Calabogie, Ontario Canada this weekend, May 14 and 15.
A partnership between the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), Porsche Motorsports North America and Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada will headline a full weekend slate of on and off track activities, including GT and Formula Libre races and a performance by Canadian musician and television presenter Wayne Rostad.
Ottawa’s Terry Dale, a CASC/ASN Canada and FIA International Licensed Race Steward and the Race Director of IMSA’s Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship, has been named the Race Director for the new series. Dale looks forward to this exciting new chapter in Canadian motorsports.
“Porsche and Porsche Motorsport North America, in selecting Canada as the 20th country to host its hugely successful and universally acclaimed GT3 Cup Challenge Series, create an incredible opportunity for Canadian drivers to showcase their talents in a highly competitive and universally respected driver-focused series,” said Dale. “It will be an honor for me to be working as the Series Race Director on behalf of IMSA and ASN Canada FIA - the sanctioning authority and operational partners for this Canadian version."
Dale is also enthusiastic about the choice of venue for the debut of the new series, the Alan Wilson-designed Calabogie Motorsports Park. Built in 2006, the 3.05 mile road course west of Ottawa was created to compliment the local topography, working with the uniqueness of the Canadian woodlands.
"I have been involved with the Calabogie Motorsports Park facility since it was a gravel road and it has since blossomed into a truly world class facility that beats most North American race tracks hands down. It is an exciting track to race on, offering outstanding facilities and amenities to both racers and spectators and is located in a spectacularly scenic part of Canada. That the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada should have its inaugural event at Calabogie Motorsports Park puts this event solidly up there as a 'Must See, Must Attend' motorsports happening!”
The new series will be contested in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, one of the world’s most successful race cars. Developed for Porsche one-make cups worldwide, the 911 GT3 Cup car is based on the production 911 GT3 RS road car, with the same output of 450 bhp and the same maximum engine speed of 8,500 rpm. Each Porsche will compete on Michelin racing tires.
Three events comprise the inaugural season of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada: May 14-15 at Calabogie Motorsports Park (Calabogie, Ontario), June 3-5 at Circuit ICAR (Mirabel, Quebec) and ending the season on the same racing card as their American counterparts July 23-24 at the Mobil 1 Presents the Grand Prix of Mosport.
