The DeltaWing demonstrates its promise throughout the weekend

The DeltaWing started strong today, launching from third position to take over second spot at the start of the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Putting a five-second gap between himself and the third place P1 car, Andy Meyrick was looking forward to a solid race until a minor chassis failure caused the oil pump to fail on lap 16 of the American Le Mans Series event.

Putting the entire weekend in perspective, Meyrick and fellow DeltaWing driver Katherine Legge expressed their pride in the progress the team is making as the car continues its development.

“I made a great start - I got around the Dyson car and was second by the first corner. The car was running really strong and I was able to pull a five-second gap.  Then suddenly, the alarm came on and the car stopped. It is disappointing, we were on pace for a very strong result.

“The performance from the moment we hit the track has been terrific, especially considering that we haven’t been here before. We were close to the top in most of the sessions and that’s a big step forward. It’s hard, given our strong start in the race, but little problems happen and you have to accept them and come back stronger.

“We’ve made huge gains in the weeks since Lime Rock – the team has done a great job in the development of the car. We have to remember that this is a development program and as long as we’re seeing the kind of gains that we saw this weekend, especially with the speed of the car, then we know we’re moving in the right direction.  We’ve proven how genuinely competitive we can be.”

Katherine Legge

“The car felt great in the warm up. We tried a harder compound Bridgestone tire for the race, one we haven’t been able to try before and it felt really good. Andy and I were very confident for the race. But like Andy said, we’re still developing the car and still moving forward.”

Next up on the ALMS schedule is the Orion Energy Systems 245 from Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The live race broadcast will be on ABC at 3:00pm Sunday, August 11. Live qualifying will be on ESPN3.com at 10:45am Saturday, August 10.
