GM Invests US$1.4 Billion Into Texas Full-Size SUV Plant

GM will invest US$1.4 billion into its Arlington, Texas full-size SUV plant, with the extensive work scheduled to be completed in 2018, company o fficials announced. The investment started over the summer, and will provide a new paint shop, body shop, an expanded assembly area, and new tooling for the next generation of its full-size SUVs, including the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade.

Meanwhile, GM Canada will be finalizing layo ffs to about 1,000 workers at its Oshawa assembly plant by the end of November, after the production of the Chevrolet Camaro moves to Lansing, Michigan. About 100 new hires in GM’s Canadian Engineering Centre in Oshawa will somewhat help to o ffset those job losses, which will expand its relationship with local universities and research facilities to become a research hub for connected cars, urban mobility systems and green technologies, said the company.
