Ford’s newest one-off Mustang GT creation will probably never see the light of day this side of the boarder, but to be honest, we could care less. This beautiful piece of muscle was created to honour the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and help raise money for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles program, directed at inspiring over 1.6 million young aviators and innovators since its inception in 1992.
To be auctioned off on August 1 during the EAA’s AirVenture Oshkosh aviation celebration, this 5.0 L 2014 Mustang GT pays homage to the F-16 Falcon with a glass roof and the same red, white and blue paint scheme, including decals and a tail section similar to its airborne counterpart. Forgiato 22-inch wheels, a widebody kit and a handcrafted F-16 “belly pan” help give the car a menacing fighter look. Making it even more drool-worthy is its identification, or VIN number 0001.
“The dedication and excellence displayed by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds are qualities we also celebrate at Ford,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of the Ford board of directors. “With this year’s beautiful U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Edition Mustang, we’ve captured the recognizable symbols of their stature and paired it with the innovation our Ford design and engineering teams build into all of our products.
The latest Mustang joins a long lineage of other Pony cars to support the Young Eagles program, including the AV8R, AV-X10, SR-71 and Blue Angel Mustang. Collectively, the cars have raised an impressive $1.9 million for the cause.
