This week we're getting behind the wheel of the Subaru half of the Subaru-Toyota joint venture that produces the BRZ and the Toyota 86 (formerly Scion FR-S) rear-wheel drive sports car twins.
We drove the FR-S back in 2012 when both cars debuted as 2013 models, but this marks our first time behind the wheel of the BRZ.
Four years on, both cars receive a mid-cycle update for 2017. With respect to the BRZ, it receives a slight power bump to 205 hp and 156 lb-ft. of torque, which is a 5 hp and and 5 lb-ft increase over the outgoing model.
The bump only applies to models equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, however. Power output remains unnchanged (200 / 151) for those that utilize the 6-speed automatic. (Note: A similar change also applies to the 2017 Toyota 86. The 6-speed manual versions are rated at 205 / 158, while the 6-speed autoboxes check in at 200 / 151.)
The 2017 BRZ also receives a revised front end with standard LED headlights and daytime running lights, a retuned suspension for better handling and a VDC track mode for performance driving.
Subaru Canada has furnished us with a brand new tester finished in World Rally Blue Pearl equipped with the Sport Tech package ($2,000) that adds, among other things, embroidered BRZ seat backs, LED fog lights, multifunction display meter and high-lustre door and instrument panel trim, all of which are new for the 2017 model year.

- 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds
