Audi announced it's sporty SQ5 SUV will move away from TDI power outside of Europe for a more conventional gasoline engine in 2014. While the look and feel of the sport utility stays the same, it will now feature a 3.0-litre TFSI supercharged V6 capable of 354 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque.

Being released at the NAIAS in Detroit next week, the SQ5 sits lower than it’s Q-badged brother by 30-millimetres, suspension is tightened and brakes feature an SQ5 stamp which sit inside 20 or 21-inch wheel options. The 8-speed Tiptronic automatic remains, with AWD and two shifting modes depending on your driving style.

The zero-to-100 km/h top speed ranks at a class-best 5.3 seconds in North America, but unfortunately ranks lower than the diesel-powered TDI version that will continue to sell in Europe (5.1 sec.). With a supercharged top speed of 250 km/h and a long list of standard features, including xenon plus LED headlights, full driver information system with color display and Pearl Nappa leather and Alcantara sport seats, it’s doubtful there will be many complaints. Pricing is yet to be announced, but look for it in showrooms late 2013.
