Mercedes-Benz came to Frankfurt with five world premieres, but the most talked about model was undoubtedly the S-Class and the Concept S-Class Coupe, showcasing the full-size performance and efficient technologies from the German automaker. Loaded with features that prelude the future of driving technology, the S-Class showcased the automaker's new S 500 Intelligent Drive technology, allowing the vehicle to accelerate and decelerate under 60 km/h – perfect for stop-and-go-traffic.
“The S 500 INTELLIGENT DRIVE uses sensors that are also available in the production version of the S-Class – just more of them. The car uses these to capture the massive amounts of data in traffic. It’s as if the car is permanently playing speed chess – but in milliseconds and with dozens of opponents at the same time. Because, in traffic, there are significantly more figures in play than would fit onto a chess board,” said Daimler AG Chairman and Head of Mercedes-Benz cars Dr. Dieter Zetsche.
Also new to the S-Class is a 3.0-litre plug-in hybrid V6 capable of just 3.0L/100 km. The company said it “marks a further milestone” towards a zero-emission future of Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
The new S 63 AMG followed the Sedan spotlight in Frankfurt as the most dynamic S-Class ever. The most powerful high-performance saloon in the luxury segment, it sets accents in handling, lightweight design and efficiency, with an AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine capable of 585 hp. Even as a V8, the company said they are still moving towards efficiency, with a 100 kg lighter engine package and fuel consumption of 10.1 to 10.3L/100 km. The new S 63 AMG is also optionally available for the first time with the performance-oriented AMG 4-MATIC all-wheel drive.
“Concerns about the environment are not an issue at all. The 5.5-litre V8 biturbo has more power but consumes around one litre less than its predecessor,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt.
