In wake of the company's realignment in motorsport strategy, today BMW Motorrad announced they will no longer be a participant in the FIM World Superbike Championship, effective immediately following the final race. Joining the WSBK in 2009, the manufacturer has celebrated 11 wins and 33 podiums, finishing runner-up in the title hunt last year.
Motorrad says it will continue its involvement in motorsport, but has shifted its efforts to 500cc projects in expanding commercial markets worldwide.
That leaves current drivers Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies without a ride next year.
“The team is a very professional and motivated group of people and I am sure they will continue to do everything to end the season on a high note”, GM of BMW Motrrad WSBK, Andrea Buzzoni said. "I am sorry about the decision, but I understand the strategic decision making of the company. I want to thank all the people who are involved in this project.”
