Although CES is beginning in only a few days, Audi has already shown the world their latest iteration of the Sport Quattro concept, called the Laserlight. This new model is special due to Audi's new implementation of laser technology. Found in the front headlights is a mixture of matrix LEDs for the low beam light and lasers contained within the inner element of the headlights for the high beams.

The use of lasers are a large improvement to the LED lights that are being implemented across Audi's entire lineup. Laser diodes are significantly smaller than LEDs, as well as the highbeams have a lighting range that is approximately twice the distance of LEDs. The luminosity of laser highbeams is improved by three times when compared to LEDs as well. 

The new concept also builds on other technology developed by Audi for other areas of the car such as the drivetrain. Considering that Audi is investing heavily in plug-in hybrid drivetrains with their E-Tron models, it's no surprise that a similar system can be found in the Laserlight concept. The combined system output of the 4 litre biturbo and electric motors is 700 hp and 590 lb-ft. With such large power figures, it's surprising that Audi managed to keep the fuel economy at just 2.5 liters per 100 km. Other fuel saving features include Cylinder on Demand (COD), which is Audi's implementation of cylinder deactivation, as well as engine start-stop functionality. 

Considering that Audi has recently stated they will be investing over thirty billion dollars in research and development for product expansion, we hope that it's time they put the Sport Quattro concept into production, even if it's a limited run.
