Officials from Formula 1 confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that a Grand Prix will take place along the Hudson River in Northern New Jersey near New York City in June 2013.

The event, which is officially called the Grand Prix of America at Port Imperial, will utilize a street course that runs for 3.2 miles (5.2 kilometres) through the New Jersey towns of West New York and Weehauken, both of which are in sight of the Manhattan skyline.

The announcement was made at Weehauken's Port Imperial Ferry Terminal, with both New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and West New York mayor Felix Roque in attendance.

"This is another example of what New Jersey can do when we work together," Christie said. "I can assure the people from Formula One this is going to be one of the wisest decisions you've ever made."

The race weekend is expected to attract approximately 100,000 visitors, and Christie said the positive financial impact for local economies to be "enormous". Christie's office indicated that no public money will be used to fund the event.

The United States has not hosted an F1 race since 2007 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A race is also scheduled for the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas in November 2012.
