Rick Hendrick, founder of the Hendrick Automotive Group, owner of the Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup team and a huge Camaro enthusiast and collector, paid a visit to GM's Oshawa Assembly plant to receive his three 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1s, which the Oshawa plant has just begun building.
The Camaro ZL-1, which debuted last year at the Chicago Auto Show, is the fastest production Camaro ever built. Equipped with GM's LSA 6.2L Supercharged V8 engine, which is also available in the Cadillac CTS-V, the ZL-1 is expected to put down approximately 580hp and 566 lb.-ft. of torque. According to GM's website, it is slated to start at $58,000.
Hendrick reserved the first two ZL-1 VINs (001 and 002), along with number 69, which is significant to Hendrick because he owns a 1969 Camaro ZL-1.
The event caused quite a stir in the plant, as dozens of GM employees, along with a large media contingent greeted Hendrick's arrival. Among the attendees were Kevin Williams, President of General Motors of Canada, along with Al Oppenheiser, the Camaro's chief engineer.
Hendrick answered questions, posed for photos and even attended a private autograph signing for GM employees after the media event had concluded.
