The DTM has made promotional visits to Moscow to prepare for the series' first race on the city circuit, but the pressure is on Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller and Bruno Spengler to perform, as Rockenfeller leads the defending champ by just two points in the standings.
Rockenfeller is joined this weekend by BMW driver Andy Priaulx and former DTM driver Ralf Schumacher to get a feel for the short, 2.555-kilometer road circuit and prepare fans for things to come.
Although Moscow Raceway hosted the 3.5L Formula Renault World Series last year, the DTM race marks the first top-tier international series to break ground in the Russian city.
Ex-Formula One driver Vitaly Petrov will also be on hand this weekend to conduct demonstrations on the circuit. Along with the other three drivers, they will be offering race fans the chance to ride along in hot laps around the track.
While the visit this weekend is promotional, Rockenfeller understands the difficulties he might face on the track next weekend.
“It really is a good feeling to see how big the passion for motorsport here in Russia is. I’m looking forward to the race and excited to see if our RS 5 DTM will feel comfortable on the short track. It’s the first race in a long time at which everybody is starting from scratch – that makes it a thriller.”
“For me, being at the DTM is a great pleasure," Petrov said. "I have never driven such a car or talked to a DTM driver before. One can’t rule out that I may be driving in the DTM one day as well. The DTM is at a top level and the cars are fantastic. It is a unique series and I would love to be part of it one day, too.”
