Sudbury District Motorsports Association (SDMA) to build motorsports complex

Caution: May cause perma-smile

The popularity of motorsports is marked by its rapidly growing worldwide appeal. It is estimated the economic impact of the global motorsports industry is now well over 75 billion dollars per year. Sudbury, Ontario is poised to host one of the most exciting and diverse motorsports complexes in North America.

Sudbury, one of the largest cities on Earth by area, and the economic hub of Northern Ontario, is within a six-hour drive of a third of Canada’s population. Furthermore, the northern U.S. states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan cover a catchment area of over 67 million people.

Dedicated motorsports enthusiasts have come together to form the Sudbury District Motorsports Association (SDMA.) The SDMA, a not-for-profit organization, is an amalgamation of local racing organizations, competitors, spectators and the community as whole. This group of passionate stakeholders is now united to the development of a multifaceted motorsports park; the infrastructure needed host a multitude of racing, educational and entertainment events. With plans supported by Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments, SDMA is on track organizing a multifaceted year-round, motorsports complex.

The motorsports complex will feature grandstands overlooking a drag strip, a road course, motocross track, snowcross track, dirt oval, kart racing, mud bog lanes and a demolition derby arena. There will also be room for other activities and a future for "alternative” racing events.

Aside from racing there will be an amphitheatre, drive-in movie theatre, campgrounds and as well as enough parking and event space to host a wide variety of car shows, concerts and other events.

This park aims to be one of the few multifaceted year-round motorsports park facilities, and certainly aims to be the only one to serve such a broad array of events.

SDMA is focused on bringing safe, family-oriented fun opportunities to participants and spectators of all ages. The prospective project offers such a benefit for community safety that the Greater Sudbury Police Service has formed a relationship with SDMA. The message "Racing belongs on the track, not on the street" is a sentiment that is shared by both organizations.

With our initial investment dollars from membership sales we have done the following:
1. Formation of a registered, structured and insured not-for-profit corporation.
2. Leveraging approximately $200,000 in municipal and provincial funding.
3. Development of a business plan and conceptual (report posted at www.sudburymotorsports.ca).
4. Completion of a Phase 1 environmental impact assessment and natural environment inventory.
5. Achievement of a three-year hold on development lands while design refinement and implementation consultation is concluded.
6. The project identified as a priority for the City of Greater Sudbury City Council.
7. Hiring of a project coordinator, John Antonioni.
8. Website development and hosting at www.SudburyMotorsports.ca.

The SDMA is now gearing up to enter the final design and building stages.
