Cuban law has stipulated no cars can be bought or sold in the country unless they operated in the country before the end of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Judge how you want, but if anything, we can thank those laws for providing some of the most beautiful vehicles anywhere.
Diving in to this rich history, former Red Bull F1 driver David Coulthard and the Red Bull Racing team travelled to Cuba to see some of the 60,000 classic cars and drive through the Havana streets in a 1955 Pontiac as part of the Cuban Classic Car Rally.
“I’ve heard about the old cars in Cuba but you really need to come here to understand how the cars are held together with bits of whatever they can find,” Coulthard said. “They can’t import spare parts so where most mechanics would take out a broken part and replace it with a new one, here they have to think of creative solutions.”
