MO2 0130 720Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., Peter Cunningham, of Milwaukee, Wis. (pictured), and Michael Cooper, of Syosset, N.Y., set new Pirelli World Challenge qualifying records at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in qualifying for Saturday's first race of the Cadillac Mid-Ohio Grand Prix Presented by StopTech.

Each class was allotted 12 minutes for qualifying. In the GT session, Pobst - who also led practice earlier in the day - easily broke Patrick Long's year-old qualifying record of 1:23.967 (96.809 mph) with a lap of 1:22.693 (98.301 mph) in the No. 6 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60.

It was the fourth pole position of the season and the 39th of Pobst's World Challenge career. He will be joined on the front row by his K-PAX Racing teammate, Alex Figge, of Denver, Colo.

"The phoenix has risen from the ashes," Pobst exclaimed. "We had a little fire problem back at Mosport with the No. 6 K-PAX Volvo and it's so good to be back with the car. It's better than ever. I mean, it was fast at Mosport, it's a fast race car, and we just did squeak out my teammate, Alex Figge, so it's 1-2 for the K-PAX Volvo team.

"We've got a rolling start for tomorrow, which is going to be a new wrinkle. We normally have a big advantage on the standing start and on a rolling start we don't have that because of our all-wheel drive, so it's going to be good to be on the front row. I've done a lot of starts here at Mid-Ohio. We're going to be in good shape. We're going to have to see if our cars can hold up in the heat and in the race tomorrow afternoon. Who knows? Maybe it'll even rain. Big credit to K-PAX Volvo for repairing this No. 6 car, bringing it back out and helping me get the S60 on the pole and Alex in second place. Front row for the K-PAX Volvos!"

Figge starts second on the strength of a lap at 1:22.744 (98.240 mph) in the No. 9 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60. He won the first race of the World Challenge doubleheader at Mid-Ohio last year and will be looking for a repeat of that performance on Saturday.

Andy Pilgrim, of Boca Raton, Fla., will start third in the No. 8 Cadillac CTS-V.R leading a sweep of positions three through five for Cadillac Racing. Pilgrim posted a best lap at 1:23.283 (97.605 mph) and was followed by Jordan Taylor, of Apopka, Fla., in fourth with a lap at 1:23.333 (97.546 mph) in the No. 5 Cadillac CTS-V.R. Championship leader Johnny O'Connell, of Flowery Branch, Ga., qualified fifth at 1:23.622 (97.209 mph) in the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac CTS-V.R.

Like Pobst in GT, Cunningham also had no trouble breaking the GTS qualifying record. He drove his No. 42 Acura/HPD/RealTime Racing Acura TSX to a best lap of 1:29.663 (90.659 mph) to take the class pole, his fifth of the season and the World Challenge record 49th of his career. He also held the previous record, set last year with a lap at 1:31.826 (88.524 mph).

"We knew what the track was going to be like the way it gets here when it's hot at Mid-Ohio in the afternoon," Cunningham said. "Having the pole last year, we knew how to set up the car. Now, with the V6 engine, we're making up a lot of ground down the straightaway. It's definitely faster than last year and the whole field, I think, is faster, but we had enough for the pole. It was a great day for Acura and HPD. Tomorrow is what counts, and Sunday, so we're cautiously optimistic for a great weekend."

In keeping with the theme set in GT, Cunningham will share the GTS front row with his teammate, Nick Esayian, of San Diego, Calif. Esayian logged a best time of 1:30.018 (90.302 mph) in the No. 34 Acura/HPD/RealTime Racing Acura TSX to secure second on the class grid.

Third in GTS went to Kevin Gleason, of Johnstown, Pa., in the No. 60 Napleton Porsche Cayman S with a lap of 1:30.097 (90.223 mph). Al Carter, of Greenville, Del., qualified fourth in GT at 1:30.307 (90.013 mph) and fifth on the grid went to Michael Galati, of Olmstead, Ohio, at 1:30.397 (89.923 mph) in the No. 36 Kia Motors America Kia Optima.

Technical difficulties during the Touring Car qualifying session delayed complete results, but an exhaustive review of Race Keeper data revealed that Cooper, the class points leader, also broke the Touring Car qualifying record.

Cooper posted a best lap at 1:34.860 (85.692 mph) in the No. 03 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Mazdaspeed 3 topping the previous record of 1:35.066 (85.507 mph) set by Aaron Povoledo last year. It was the fourth Touring Car pole of the season for Cooper.

Second quickest in Touring Car was Tristan Herbert, of Reston, Va., in the No. 33 HPA/Renn Gruppe/Brimtek/Steve Goldin Racing Volkswagen Jetta GLI at 1:35.390 (85.216 mph). Travis Wolcott, of Boulder, Colo., will start third in the No. Emich VW/StopTech/3Zero3 Motorsports Volkswagen Jetta GLI, followed by Ian Baas, of Noblesville, Ind., in the No. 49 APR Tuned/Motul/Rays Volkswagen GTI at 1:36.030 (84.648 mph). Todd Lamb, of Atlanta, Ga., rounded out the Touring Car top five at 1:36.320 (84.393 mph) in the No. 71 National Karting News/HPD Honda Civic Si.

Saturday's Pirelli World Challenge Cadillac Mid-Ohio Grand Prix Presented by StopTech will be go off from a rolling start at 5:10 p.m. ET. Live video streaming will be available on www.world-challengetv.com, and NBC Sports Network will televise the race at 1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 25.
