The FIA International Tribunal came to a decision today regarding the illegal tire tests in May involving Pirelli and the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team.
Members of the tribunal decided against a points penalty against Mercedes, instead giving them a reprimand and suspending the team from participating in the upcoming three-day young driver training test. Pirelli was also given a reprimand.
The tribunal took into account Pirelli's defence that each team was given the opportunity to test the tires, which were conducted in the interest of safety after recent delamination problems. Mercedes' penalty resulted from using a current version of the car, which undoubtedly gave them some feedback on the operation of the current tires, despite the fact any tests were conducted solely by Pirelli.
