The wait is finally over. If you've wanted to hear what the new turbocharged V6 Formula One powerplant will sound like, Mercedes AMG has released an audio clip to go along with a graphic video of a lap around Monza.
The new 1.6-litre engine is set to achieve the same 550 total horsepower compared to the current V8, but using 30 per cent less fuel (100 kg race fuel cell vs. 150 kg cell). Engine rpms will also be lowered from 18,000 to 15,000 when the 2014 regulations take effect.
Combined with the new turbocharger, the 2014 engine also makes use of the new 'ERS' Energy Recovery System, combining the current KERS system with two new generators to recover exhaust heat energy. The result is a dual energy recovery system that outputs 161 horsepower compared to today's 80.5. The powerplant also delivers greater horsepower across the entire powerband.
