Helping to solidify the newly-formed Formula E series, which is planned to begin competition in September next year, Fox Sports has officially signed on as the official broadcaster.

The FIA championship is the world’s first fully electric car racing series, complete with 10 teams and two drivers each. Cars will be capable of reaching speeds as high as 220 km/h with zero emissions and races are scheduled to be an hour in length. The preliminary calendar is set to visit 10 major cities that include Berlin, Rome, London, Los Angeles and Miami.

The broadcasting deal means the global racing series will broadcast in both exclusive and non-exclusive markets, spanning nearly 90 countries that include Canada, Latin America/Caribbean, the Netherlands, Italy, Singapore, Australia, Asia, India and Africa.

“This series makes racing very relevant well into the future,” said Carlos Martinez, President Latin America for FOX International Channels, who helped broker the deal. “With a global approach to acquiring knowledge and fast-tracking technology through the world of international racing competition, the FIA Formula E Championship is much more than just another weekend at the track…it makes racing an integral part of solving one of the world’s most daunting challenges and we are thrilled to be a part of that process.”

On top of television broadcasting, the deal will also encompass exclusive and non-exclusive online and mobile device transmission rights.
