At this year’s Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Chevrolet’s Corvette took the center stage with special C7 appearances on and off track, highlighted by a convoy of the company’s newest muscle car and Stingray edition. Our own Group Managing Editor Shaun Keenan was one of the fortunate few able to take part in the event.
The weekend culminated with a surprise last-minute appearance of the C7.R race car at Laguna Seca. Dressed in camouflage, the C7s track debut showcased the new body style of the GT car, with an extended C-pillar compared to the current C6 racer.
Although the company has yet to confirm the powerplant, it is believed the new C7.R will use a configuration similar to the current 5.5-litre LS7 V8 when it enters next season as part of the United SportsCar Racing GTLM class.
Shy of wanting to take one home, Keenan had four words for the new C7, describing it as “Car of the Year.” With the performance and looks – from production to race car – at a price point that makes other exotics cringe, it’s a prediction that just might happen.
