The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has unveiled its provisional calendar for the 2014 F1 season, with a record-breaking 22 dates slated to take place from March 16 to November 30.
Most notable of the changes are the inclusion of Mexico, Russia, Austria, and the streets of New Jersey, which was confirmed by officials just today.
New Jersey was the least likely of the four to be included on the calendar after President Tom Cotter stepped down earlier this year, but race promoter Leo Hindery, Jr. was determined to bring the race to New Jersey after a failed 2013 attempt.
"The entire Grand Prix of America team is thrilled to join the 2014 FIA calendar and we look forward to bringing world-class Formula One racing to New Jersey," he said.
F1 officials visited the Mexico track early last week to solidify approvals, while the Austrian track, owned by F1 powerhouse team Red Bull has all but confirmed since July. Construction of the new Sochi track in Russia moved ahead quickly and the group assured Formula One Management it would be completed in time for the provisional date.
New Jersey will be the first of the four North American races. It is slotted in the middle of three-straight race weekends that starts in Monaco and finishes in Montreal on June 8. Austria follows the Canadian date two weeks later, while round 17 in Russia is scheduled a week before the Japanese Grand Prix. Mexico is the final of the four dates and the second-last on the calendar, after the Grand Prix of the USA in Texas and before the series finale in Brazil.
The final calendar is still subject to circuit approval.
